Westfield continued their hot hitting on Thursday evening against a tough Warren team and improved their record to 7 -3. A total of 16 hits, which included 2 homeruns, 2 triples and 2 doubles, enabled the Blue Devils to score 12 runs. Warren was held to just 7 runs on 7 hits.
Eric Varakian lead off the game by smacking a triple to right center field. Chris Rinaldi and Nick Mele followed with back-to-back homers giving Westfield a quick 3 runs. Vin Difilippo then tripled and scored on a RBI fielders choice by Chris Boutsikaris. Brett Robertshaw and Devin Anderson added singles before the inning was over enabling Westfield to score 2 more runs. At the end of the first, a total of 5 runs had been scored. The Blue Devils continued hitting over the next couple of innings, adding 3 more runs in the second and third, and 1 more in the fourth. Warren put a couple of runs on the board in the first, but kept quiet until the fourth when they loaded the bases and launched a shot into left which scored everyone (yes, it was a grand slam). They scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth.
Vin Difilippo finished the night going 3 for 3, with a triple, 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Chris Rinaldi was 3 for 4, with a homerun, 2 doubles, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Eric Varakian was also 3 for 4, with a triple, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
Scott Tupper receives the defensive nod of the game. While playing 2nd base in the bottom of the fifth, Scott recorded all 3 outs for the team. First he made a backhanded stab of a hard hit shot, then fielded a rountine grounder to 2nd and finally made a diving catch of soft infield blooper. Way to go Scottie!!
The teams plays a double header on Saturday.... the opening round of the district tournament in Scotch Plains and then over to Cranford for the next game of that tournament.
