The Westfield White team lost their season opener today to New Providence by a score of 8 -7. New Providence scored first with 2 runs in the opening inning followed by a scoreless second. Westfield got on the board with 1 run in the third and 4 runs in the fourth. With Westfield leading 5 - 3 after 3 1/2 innings, New Providence came back to score 2 more runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 5. Westfield came to bat in the fifth and put 2 more runs on the board to take a 7 -5 lead before New Providence scored 3 runs of their own and held on to win the game by a score of 8 -7.
Pitching duties were shared by Brett Robertshaw, Scott Tupper, and Chris Varano. The three combined for 6 strikeouts while giving up 8 hits.
Defensively, Westfield made some outstanding plays. Catcher Vincent Difilippo made a quick throw to first baseman Nick Mele in the 2nd inning and picked off a New Providence baserunner. In the fifth, centerfielder Scott Tupper caught a fly ball and threw home to catcher Eric Varakian who tagged the runner trying to score from third.
At the plate today, everyone in the lineup reached base at least once as Westfield banged out a total of 9 hits and drew 9 walks. Devin Anderson led the way going 3 for 3 .
Next Game Saturday, June 14 vs. Basking Ridge at 10 am.
